Ancient history of dream interpretation
In ancient times, all dreams were considered prophetic, and those who knew how to interpret them were considered soothsayers and prophets. It was believed that dreams descend on a person at the will of the gods - this is how they communicate with their flock, guiding and warning them. In particular, this point of view was held by Aristotle, who lived in the 4th century BC.
The first attempt to classify dreams was made in the second century BC by Artemidorus of Daldian. Taking the symbolism of things and events as a basis, the thinker abandoned the divine origin of dreams, focusing on their practical application. According to Artemidor, all dreams can be divided into ordinary and prophetic.
- Ordinary dreams reflect a person’s experiences; they represent another attempt to survive, rethink or correct situations that happen to us during our waking moments.
- Prophetic dreams, according to Artemidorus, are in turn divided into direct contemplative and allegorical. Straightforward people predict the future simply and without cunning; allegorical people use symbolic language, which they still need to learn to understand.
Already at that time, there was an understanding that the interpretation of dreams should take into account such factors as the social and cultural background of the sleeper. Over the centuries, it becomes noticeable that the interpretation of symbols is also based on the realities of that time. For example, the birth of a child, according to Artimidor, foreshadowed troubles, and flight - elevation in society.

Recent history of dream interpretation
The next significant milestone in the history of dream interpretation came with the efforts of Sigmund Freud (19th century). With his characteristic categoricalness, the psychoanalyst criticized all existing theories and made a real revolution in this topic, declaring dreams a reflection of mental processes. It is not surprising that the scientist completely rejected the mystical component of dreams, relegating it to the category of fortune telling. However, this happened at the turn of the century, at a time when interest in esotericism intensified significantly.
At the end of the last century, the phenomenon of “lucid dreaming” appeared. This practice involves controlling dreams and the events in them, which, according to the adherent of the theory, makes the successful dreamer the master of his own destiny.
Currently, dreams are still the subject of study by specialists. Attempts to form a fully working system of dream interpretation continue to this day. Everyone interested has a wide choice of tools to achieve this goal. It is noteworthy that even in the age of high technology, many continue to see mystical signs in dreams and dreams. Perhaps this is the case?
Slavic dream book
The Slavic dream book is a precious monument of ancient Russian chronicles, which combines the experience of ancestors, reflected in myths, beliefs and oral narration. The content is laconic and short, divided into several parts according to natural elements: water, fire, air, earth.
Features of the dream book
The Slavs were sure that the human soul leaves the body during sleep and passes into another world. There he can see what will happen in the future. The soul's journey is reflected in dreams, which can foreshadow imminent danger.
Thanks to dreams, you can avoid life's difficulties. At the same time, the Slavs believed that bad dreams could be experienced by those who did not live according to the rules of the “Rule” world, not according to the laws of God.
This is interesting: The Slavs divided the world into three categories - Reality, Nav, Rule. In the world of Yavi, in short, ordinary people live. Dark gods live in the world of Navi. The soul of the deceased goes into this world for purification. In the world of Pravi live the bright gods of the Slavs. They help people live honestly, “act according to the Rule.”
The content of the Slavic dream book was greatly influenced by popular dreams and signs, pagan rituals, customs and holidays.
To determine the meanings of dreams, people looked for sages (magi) who, based on their knowledge, explained the secrets of dreams. They recorded their works in special books, which were later called dream books.
Some dream books are based on the Slavic Book of Dreams. It remains the main source of many already existing.
The ancient dream book contains rare information that is difficult to find anywhere.
The source of replenishment of the dream book were Russian beliefs, prejudices, pagan holidays and worship rituals carried out on the days of celebration. As a result of the adoption of Christianity, religion became an additional source of influence on the creation of the dream book.
Decoding dreams according to the Slavic dream book
Features of this collection
The Old Russian dream book was based on legends, beliefs and signs of the Russian people. For people close in spirit and nationality, the interpretation of dreams with the help of the Old Russian Dream Book will not cause strong misunderstandings. However, people unfamiliar with the culture of the Russian people will largely not be able to understand and accept the interpretation of dreams contained in it.
- In addition to the legends that formed its basis, to decipher the symbolism and association, the remains of knowledge that have survived to this day were used, where pagan rituals, everyday superstitions of our ancestors, as well as features of life that existed in Rus' before the birth of Christianity were used.
- You need to interpret dreams using the Old Russian Dream Book only if you are confident in your own knowledge and want to unravel your dream from the point of view of the Russian people. This method of interpretation is not suitable for every dream; it is used rather in exceptional cases. However, if the dream is extremely confusing and contains elements of Old Russian life, you will not find a better dream interpreter other than the Old Russian Dream Book.
- The historical traditions and connections between the contemporaries and ancestors of the Russian people are truly amazing. Although now it is rare to meet those people who believe in paganism and live according to the principles of their distant ancestors. But even so, there are those for whom the interpretation of dreams with the help of the Old Russian Dream Book seems primordially true and the only correct one.
Regardless of whether you believe in the interpretation of dreams using dream books or not, the fact remains that they contain the knowledge of our ancestors.

Lunar and solar dream books give a special interpretation of dream images
This is not entirely true. Most often, dream books called “lunar” (as well as “Dreams by day of the week”) are not based at all on the interpretation of a particular image, but only indicate the degree of reliability of the dream in accordance with the calendar of lunar days (or days of the week). For example, according to astrologers, dreams seen on the first lunar day will most likely come true, and dreams of the second lunar day are most often empty and insignificant. It is also believed that dreams from Wednesday to Thursday relate to a person’s professional activity (in particular, they reflect his relationship with his superiors), from Thursday to Friday - they most often come true, from Friday to Saturday - they can help to understand a difficult life situation, etc. .
“Solar” dream books can either, like lunar ones, contain indications of the degree of reliability of dreams (dreams seen on the first day of a month most often foreshadow family troubles, 2.5 and 6 are most likely to come true), or be supplemented with brief information about the meaning several dream images. For example, according to one of the solar dream books, on the 8th sunny day people often have prophetic dreams. Moreover, the image of fire, lightning or thunder seen in a dream on this day promises a person changes in life, while the starry sky or flight testifies to the fulfillment of desires and patronage. Dreaming of icons - to upcoming trials, visiting a hairdresser (or hair loss) - to loss and ruin, death. A corridor seen in a dream on this day means loss of freedom, animals mean gossip and rumors, meat and blood means illness. This completes the interpretation of dreams, and to interpret other dream images, a person will have to turn to other dream books.
Miller's dream book is considered the most authoritative
Indeed, a collection of interpretations of dream images, compiled by American psychologist Gustav Hindman Miller and published in 1901 in New York, is now called “Miller's Dream Book - 10,000 Interpretations of Your Dreams” and is considered a classic. Moreover, the dream book gives not only the interpretation of dreams, but also some advice on how to behave in a given situation, about which the subconscious warns a person in the form of dream images. However, it should be noted that, firstly, due to changes in lifestyle, some advice has become outdated. Secondly, many objects that have come into use these days (telephone, TV, computer, etc.) and are now often dreamed of by people were simply unknown to Miller. As a consequence, it is impossible to find an interpretation of the mentioned images in this dream book.
The Old Russian dream book was created by our ancestors many hundreds of years ago
Yes, from ancient times our ancestors were engaged in the interpretation of dream images, and tried to systematize their conclusions and observations by compiling dream books. However, a selection of dream interpretations, called the “Old Russian Dream Book,” was clearly created not so long ago, as evidenced by the explanation of the meanings of some dream images characteristic of our days (for example, a car, a lampshade, a newspaper, a tie, an elevator, etc.). The mentioned objects simply did not exist during the times of Ancient Rus', and, as a result, could not be dreamed of, and subsequently interpreted in dream books.
